To be successful, a business must build and maintain trust with its customers and clients. An
essential component of this trust is the protection of personal information.. It is equally important
to understand that identity theft is a significant issue for Canadians and is a real threat in
today's technological environment. For these reasons, it makes good business sense to ensure that
privacy is an integral part of your overall business strategy.
In Canada, all organizations that collect, use and disclose personal information in the course of
commercial activity are subject to the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents
Act (PIPEDA). This presentation will focus on the responsibilities of these organizations with
respect to this legislative regime and, specifically, will explain the ten privacy principles on which
PIPEDA is based. The presentation will also outline some of the risks associated with poor
information handling practices and will provide some useful insight into the advantages of offsetting
those risks.
