News - Small Business Week 2007

For Small Business Week, October 14-20,2007 CBDC Trinity Conception organized in partnership with the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) and Department of Innovation Trade and Rural Development (INTRD) a networking and information evening held at the Harbour Breeze in Harbour Grace on October 16, 7-9 PM. The theme for this years Small Business Week was "A world without boundaries, open to new markets".

Guests were invited to listen to guest speaker, David Haire, VP Best Practices and Lean Management, Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters as well as visit the various booth displays of partnering organizations. James Garland, Account Manager brought greetings from the Business Development Bank of Canada, David Coffin, Economic Development Officer spoke on behalf of the Department of Innovation Trade and Rural Development, and Diane Hodge-Burt, Executive Director represented CBDC Trinity Conception.

During this event CBDC Trinity Conception awarded a local entrepreneur Gladys Lynch, Croix's Hill Bridal and Sewing Shop, with the first annual Business Distinction Award.

It was in May of 2002 when Gladys Lynch left her permanent job due to a recurring back injury not knowing what the future would bring her. She approached the CBDC and was approved for the Self Employment Benefit program for 52 weeks to open a small sewing and alteration business . In August of 2002 she opened her basement door to Croix’s Hill Sewing Shop.

With the assistance of CBDC Trinity Conception’s Investment program, Gladys Lynch now operates Croix’s Hill Bridal and Sewing Shop in a brand new building at the top of Brazil’s Hill in Spaniard’s Bay. She can custom make wedding gowns, dresses for bridesmaids, flower girls and mother of the bride. They also make confirmation dresses, christening gowns, curtains, quilts, bed skirts and prom gowns, in addition to alterations. As well, the bridal shop orders and sells wedding gowns, prom gowns, flower girl dresses, tiaras and veils and offers complete wedding attire rentals.

Gladys’ passion is very evident as you walk around her shop. You can view the many pictures and thank you cards from Brides that have come and gone, and for anyone that knows Ms. Lynch, her friendliness, professionalism and down to earth attitude speaks for itself.

Overall the night was a success as the host organizations saluted the small businesses of the Baccalieu Trail.
